Private Stock Graphite Guitars

In 2006, Paul Reed Smith wrote a document called The Rules of Tone. The point was to put down in writing all of the philosophies that contribute to making a “magic” instrument. Many “tweaks” have been embodied by our team as a practical result of this document, including using unplated brass at key points on our hardware, acclimating and drying our woods the way we do, working to constantly maintain clear, hard, and thin finishes, and looking back at the master guitar makers in history to learn what they were thinking. Carrying on the PRS tradition of constant research and development, here is the story behind the small batch Private Stock “Graphite Guitars.”

The Private Stock 30th Anniversary Dragon - Behind the Scenes

by PRS Guitars on April 15, 2015

Filed Under Electrics / Private Stock Electrics

At first glance you may not realize that the Private Stock 30th Anniversary Dragon is constructed with over 285 pieces of inlay! The material, comprised most prominently of jade, azurite, lapis, pyrite, abalone, and mother of pearl, is placed in the routed guitar body by hand. The inlay process is so involved that we elicit the help of our friends over at Aulson Inlay. With Aulson’s knowledge and experience we were able to create this museum quality instrument that is as fun to look at as it is to play. Check out this blog post to see the Dragon’s build process!

New Paul’s Guitar Limited

by PRS Guitars on August 26, 2013

Filed Under Electrics / Private Stock Electrics

In addition to creating our core line of instruments, PRS has a team of highly talented, seasoned guitar makers crafting instruments known as “Private Stock.”

Paul Reed Smith says it best here: “The goal of Private Stock is not only to create the most beautiful and best playing guitar money can buy, but the best sounding. We work very closely with each order - through hourly discussions, experimentation, meticulous checks of every detail at each step in the process and making final tweaks when the guitar is complete - to make sure we are building the best guitars possible. If you get an extraordinary instrument from Private Stock that is equally as good as a family heirloom and a musician’s tool to make a living on, we have done our job.”

In the Spring of 2013, the Private Stock team built a limited run of one of our core line instruments, Paul’s Guitar.

In this interview, we sit down with Paul Miles, the Director of Private Stock, to get an inside look on the Paul’s Guitar Limited built by the Private Stock team.

Paul Play Testing Collection Series III Instruments

Hello everyone! Paul here. Last year at Experience PRS we got all of our best Private Stock dealers in a room and asked them to be part of a special program. The program would allow me to design and personally work on guitars at a more intimate level than anything else coming out of our shop. The program would feature exclusive specifications, such as pernambuco necks and celtic knot inlays. We would make one set per dealer each quarter – one acoustic and one electric guitar – making these instruments extremely special. That is when the Collection program was born.
