I can remember the first time I walked into my local music store and saw my first left handed Paul Reed Smith. I was ecstatic! Being a lefty is hard when you’re a guitarist going into a music store. You don’t have a lot to choose from. I was coming off of having 3 low end guitars and I was ready for my first real guitar. The problem?...I was 17. But that didn’t stop me. I knew for a fact that I was going to get something. I tried all of the expensive lefty guitars they had (which were like 3) and Paul Reed Smith was the winner. From that point on I went in there everyday just to look at it. Figuring out what I need to do to get this guitar. Then one day I went in there and I remember asking one of the salesman where the PRS was, and all he said was “we sold it, sorry man.” It was hard to process I didn’t know any other lefties in town.
I never ended buying a guitar. It took a little of time for me to get over it. Fast forward to Christmas. Family is over and we’re all getting ready to open gifts. Everyone has a gift, but me. Then from the other room I see my mom walking down the hall with this rectangular gift all wrapped up. I put two and two together but I wasn’t sure what to expect. I thought there was no way. So I open it up, and sure enough, it was the PRS (in the picture it’s the one on the right ‘99 Custom 22 Tobacco Sunburst). I think it’s safe to say I got zero sleep that night.
A few years later I was so inspired by that guitar and grateful that my parents did such a nice thing for me I decided I wanted another one, but on my own terms. So I got a full time job and worked as long and hard as I could until I ordered it (the one on the left ‘03 Custom 22 Platinum Metallic). This brings us to today. I saw that there were runs of the Custom 24 being made left handed. So I went for it (the one in the middle ‘12 Custom 24 Black Gold). It’s been a long time from my first PRS to my most current. They have served many shows for me over the years, and many more! Each of them are special to me in their own way. They will never see another owner.
