Available exclusively from the Private Stock team, every guitar offered in the model selection below is built with unparalleled attention to detail, using the highest quality materials PRS offers.
"During the 2013 Rush Clockwork Angels Tour, I had the opportunity to spend some time with a PRS Angelus Cutaway. It quickly became my pre-show warm up guitar, and I spent many hours in many hotel rooms lost in the gorgeous sound and tone of that beautiful instrument. I'm very happy to announce that I have collaborated with PRS to develop an Alex Lifeson Signature model based on this superlative platform. If you're like me, you won't be able to put it down,” Alex Lifeson.
While the craftsmanship and attention to detail are very consistent with other PRS Private Stock acoustics, this instrument embodies some new design elements that take the instrument in a unique direction. The Alex Lifeson signature PRS acoustic is slightly thinner than the company’s Angelus Cutaway and Tonare Grand and is constructed in such a way that it lends itself to louder stage volumes and the rigors of the road. The Alex Lifeson signature acoustic features a bearclaw spruce top and koa back and sides with a mahogany neck and ebony bridge, fretboard, and headstock veneer. It is adorned with Mother of Pearl and Paua “Birds in Flight” inlays and Paua purfling along the top, fretboard, and headstock veneer.
With responsive and clear highs, crisply defined lows and a sweet midrange, the PRS Angelus® Cutaway boasts a remarkable voice and lasting sustain. Though well-suited for fingerstyle players, this model is versatile enough for myriad musical styles. Check one of these award-winning acoustics out for yourself.
"What I look for in a guitar is tone and playability. Equipped with the perfect pick-up combination that gives you single or double coil sounds at the flip of a switch and a middle pickup that further expands the tone spectrum, this guitar is possibly the most versatile guitar I’ve had in my hands." - Brent Mason
Brent Mason is predominantly known for his work as a Nashville session guitarist; his playing can also be heard on countless TV commercials, film sound tracks and television scores. The Brent Mason model was designed for maximum versatility to meet the demands of session studio work. The Private Stock model has been upgraded with rear-mounted controls and a stunning combination of woods. In a career lasting more than twenty-five years, Brent has recorded with George Strait, Neil Diamond, Rascall Flatts, Dolly Parton, Randy Travis, Brad Paisley, Clint Black, Merle Haggard, Shania Twain, Faith Hill, Tim McGraw, Reba McEntire, The Judds, Willie Nelson, Toby Keith, Martina McBride, Trisha Yearwood and many, many more.
Other specifications for this instrument include a Private Stock maple top, swamp ash back, 22 fret, 25 1/4” scale length bolt-on Pattern neck, PRS old-style birds and Private Stock eagle inlays, “Brent Mason” engraved banner, high-gloss nitro finish, PRS locking tuners, narrow 408 treble and bass pickups with a 305 singlecoil middle pickup, volume and push/pull tone controls with a 5-way blade pickup selector and two mini switches for coil tapping, PRS tremolo, Brent Mason signed backplate, and paisley hardshell case.
From his beginning as a bluegrass prodigy to his current role as lead guitarist in Ricky Skagg’s band Kentucky Thunder, Cody Kilby’s distinctive, visionary voice as a guitarist has always stood apart from the pack. The Cody Kilby Private Stock acoustic features a PRS Tonare Grand body perimeter with a shallower PRS Angelus depth, PRS’s hybrid X bracing pattern, and a “Traditional” inlay pattern (only available on the Cody Kilby model).
The Private Stock Custom 24 Retro model balances several of Paul Reed Smith’s original design elements from the late 1970’s and early 1980’s with modern techniques and PRS design specifications.
One constant over the history of PRS is change. As music lovers, musicians, and guitar builders, we spend every day listening, analyzing, debating, and evolving. This model celebrates a poignant moment in our history but does not fail to consider everything we have learned between then and now.
Like Paul’s original designs, the Custom 24 Retro has a more exaggerated body carve and scoop, a thicker mahogany back, and a smaller original-style heel. The headstock shape was modeled after the 1984 Custom that Paul used to get orders to start the first PRS factory. Other specifications include a 24 fret, 25” scale length neck with a “pre-factory” inspired carve, PRS old-style birds and “pre-factory” Private Stock eagle inlays, curly maple bound fretboard, high- gloss nitro finish, PRS locking tuners, and a paisley hardshell case. The electronics for this model include a volume control and 3-way toggle pickup selector, but have been updated with a push/pull tone control that activates the sweet switch feature found on Customs from the 1980’s.
“The Martin Simpson signature model guitar is simply the result of the PRS team being truly attentive to the feedback of a player. I have felt privileged to be able to tell them what I think will make a better guitar for great acoustic playing, and they have listened to my input from materials to neck width and string spacing, pick up sound and inlays....and when the final model arrived, I was blown away by the results. This model is entirely the best materials, and the specs which I asked for, presented in a deluxe version. It is a great instrument made by people who care and strive always for the highest standards in tone, playability, workmanship and aesthetics.”
– Martin Simpson.
The Private Stock McCarty Model is the return of PRS’s production McCarty guitar (Paul’s first real attempt at a vintage-style instrument, originally introduced in 1994) to the Private Stock line. Named after Paul’s mentor and a legend in the guitar industry, the Private Stock McCarty Model is the culmination of decades of making McCarty instruments and studying vintage guitars. With traditional PRS appointments, including a 25” scale length neck, and updated with PRS Phase III locking tuners and PRS “flat jumbo” fretwire (which is lightly ground down to feel like an “old friend”), the Private Stock McCarty embodies vintage tone and classic feel, harkening back to the 1994 model, in a double cutaway package that offers effortless playability.
Other specifications for this instrument include a Private Stock maple top, mahogany back, 22 fret Pattern neck, PRS old-style birds and Private Stock eagle inlays, curly maple bound fretboard, high-gloss nitro finish, volume and push/ pull tone controls with 3-way toggle pickup selector as well as a bone nut and a paisley hardshell case.
Named after Paul’s mentor and a legend in the guitar industry, the Private Stock McCarty Singlecut is a direct reflection of Ted McCarty’s work in the 1950’s on solidbody guitars and everything he taught Paul decades later. It is simultaneously a look back to the golden age of guitar building, the culmination of Paul’s experience studying vintage guitars, and PRS’s history making McCarty instruments. With a thicker back for a more robust tone and “flat jumbo” fretwire lightly ground down to feel like an “old friend,” the Private Stock McCarty Singlecut embodies vintage tone and classic feel.
Other specifications for this instrument include a Private Stock maple top, mahogany back, 22 fret, 24.5” scale length Pattern neck, PRS old-style birds and Private Stock eagle inlays, curly maple bound fretboard, Santana headstock shape, high-gloss nitro finish, PRS locking tuners, two volume and two tone controls with a 3-way toggle pickup selector with traditional wiring, PRS two- piece stoptail as well as a bone nut and a paisley hardshell case.
Inspired by Carlos Santana’s Pre-Factory guitar, the Private Stock Santana Retro model balances several of Paul Reed Smith’s original design elements from the early 1980’s with modern designs and specifications. Like Paul’s original instruments, the Santana Retro has a deeper body carve and scoop and an original-style heel. The headstock shape is the same as the original guitars made for Carlos and has been moved closer to the body so that the nut place is more in line with historic specs.
Other specifications include a Private Stock grade maple top, mahogany back, purfling strips on the body glue joints, a 24 fret, 24.5” short scale length mahogany neck, “pre-factory” Santana inspired neck carve, Santana fret wire, PRS old-style birds and “pre-factory” Private Stock eagle inlays, high-gloss nitro finish, PRS locking tuners, an unplated PRS tremolo, and a paisley hardshell case. The electronics for this model include one volume and tone control with a 3-way toggle pickup selector.
The Tonare Grand® offers a prominent voice as well as substantial volume and midrange. Wonderful for all-around strumming, this award-winning acoustic also lends itself well to flatpickers.
“It’s an ironic thing to say about such a beautiful instrument but it becomes invisible- leaving the player to concentrate solely on the music- which is what it should be all about. The Tony McManus signature model is based on the Angelus model but with the PRS wide fingerboard and the Private Stock wood choices are pretty spectacular. The guitar is capable of going anywhere I’m capable of going musically. It works beautifully as a solo fingerstyle guitar but if I need to flatpick, it’ll go there too. It’ll accompany songs, tunes...whatever I need...tuned high and tuned low, gently caressed or driven hard.”
– Tony McManus
PRS Violin guitars are rooted in Paul Reed Smith’s belief that the guitar is the violin of our time. Starting with a limited run of Violin guitars from 2009-2010 that featured European maple tops (thought to be from the same area where Stradivari sourced his maple) and Pernambuco necks (a rare wood historically used to make violin bows), PRS is proud to continue the tradition with the Private Stock Violin II. Violin II instruments also take their lead from violins and violas, with their standard appointments including Private Stock’s new “Strad” purfling on the neck and headstock, as well as curly maple necks paired with an ebony fretboard and a “Violin” finish color that is a beautiful glowing amber/gold reminiscent of old violins.
Other features for this instrument include a Private Stock maple top, lightweight mahogany back, 22 fret, 25” scale length Pattern neck, gold mother of pearl “Violin” bird inlays and PS headstock eagle, maple, gold and white mother of pearl “Strad” fretboard and headstock purfling, high gloss nitro finish, volume and push/pull tone control with a 3-way toggle pickup selector, PRS locking tuners and a paisley hardshell case.
