How It’s Made: The SE Standard 24 Multi-Foil Finish

SE Standard 24 Multi-Foil

The unique Multi-Foil finish made its PRS debut in the late 80's when it was then referred to as the "Multi Metal" finish. Starting in 1988, we released them in small batches to the world.

The popularization of this finish was aided by Gustavo Cerati, one of Latin America's most celebrated musicians. Gustavo played a Multi-Metal finish as the lead singer of Argentinian rock band, Soda Stereo.

In a nod to the past, we re-released this special finish as a part of our 2018 SE lineup. As you can see in the video below, the process to create the Multi-Foil finish is not a simple one, and requires layers of careful spraying with an artistic eye.

Once the guitar gets its final topcoat and buff, it moves over to final assembly where the hardware and electronics are outfitted. The SE Standard 24 Multi-Foil sports two 85/15 “S” humbuckers and a 3-way blade switch with push/pull tone control. Below, PRS product demonstrator Bryan Ewald shows us that the new Multi-Foil is more than just looks:

I played a PRS in the late 80's it had a Multi-metal finish and was impressed with both the guitar and cool finish. I Never owned a PRS until I saw the SE Standard 24 at the Music Experience in May of 2018 at "Rock on the Range". I fell in love with the paint job and loved the playability of the Wide Thin neck and the tone was GREAT. I bought it!!! I can't put it down. Can't wait to buy a American made PRS A+++

It's sad that we won't be seeing the multi-foil finish any longer after 2018. I really wanted to get one for myself but I don't have enough cash for it yet. I just bought a spalted SE this year. I can't buy another one, unfortunately.
