Meet The Dealer - The Guitar Store!

#WeMakePRS

Our dealer network is important to us here at PRS Guitars! After all, they’re the folks taking care of our guitars after we make them and before they get into our customers hands! We started “Meet the Dealer” so you can get an inside peek at some of the shops that sell PRS Guitars. Check out our interview with The Guitar Store below!

Q&A with James Schultz // Owner of The Guitar Store
8300 Aurora Ave N. Seattle, WA 98103

How many years have you been in business? Why/how did you get started?

4 years. In another life I had worked for a local vintage store for years and then with a big box company. I left that to go back into the building trades then found myself laid off in 2010. A friend asked me to work his booth at the 2011 NAMM (National Association of Music Merchants) show. During the show I decided to open the store I always wanted when I returned to Seattle. I told my wife what I wanted to do and she said great why don’t you start with those 30 guitars in the back room there…

Outside of just selling guitars, what else should people know about you? Do you offer lessons, repairs, etc..?

We have a full-line repair shop. Kyle, our luthier, is an amazing wood worker and does an amazing job fixing those broken headstocks that some guitars are prone to having. We also offer an amazing variety of clinics from pedal building to set ups and artist appearances. Our teachers have about 120 students in every week. We are a real community store.

What’s your favorite piece of PRS gear at your store?

There is a Trampas Green Wood Library McCarty that just came in…..oh boy.

If you could make a PRS Private Stock Built-to-Order guitar - what would the specs be?

I talked to a guy about a Baritone Singlecut recently. Mahogany back, Burl Walnut top, Ziracote Fretboard. Hybrid hardware. Burl Birds.

Most heard song when a customer is demoing a guitar?

“Cult of Personality” By Living Color

Favorite customer interaction?

There was a kid who would come in for his lesson every week and stare at a used green Gretsch Corvette like it was an ancient shrine. He had a pretty rough live. Home issues, health issues. This guitar was a beacon to him. One day the guy who took lessons from the same teacher in the time slot before him told me he had just retired and wanted to do something nice for someone. He bought the young guy the guitar. Everyone cried. It was amazing.

Why buy a PRS from The Guitar Store?

We have the largest selection of PRS instruments in the Northwest. I fly out twice a year to the factory to pick out woods for the Wood Library runs we have PRS build. Everyone says this but, my staff are experts. We supply a unique variety of instruments and will set your guitar up to your playing style. Home town service at internet pricing.
