Private Stock Graphite Guitars

In 2006, Paul Reed Smith wrote a document called The Rules of Tone. The point was to put down in writing all of the philosophies that contribute to making a “magic” instrument. Many “tweaks” have been embodied by our team as a practical result of this document, including using unplated brass at key points on our hardware, acclimating and drying our woods the way we do, working to constantly maintain clear, hard, and thin finishes, and looking back at the master guitar makers in history to learn what they were thinking. Carrying on the PRS tradition of constant research and development, here is the story behind the small batch Private Stock “Graphite Guitars.”

Recently we began crafting a run of acoustic guitars we named “Birds Of A Feather.” These unique instruments use both Ebony and Koa woods in the fretboard to create the visual effect of birds bursting out of a dense flock. PRS Acoustic guitars are prized for their resonance, playability, and the keen attention to detail our luthiers exercise while building these instruments. Check out the photos in this blog to see the “Birds Of A Feather” up close!

The Private Stock 30th Anniversary Dragon - Behind the Scenes

At first glance you may not realize that the Private Stock 30th Anniversary Dragon is constructed with over 285 pieces of inlay! The material, comprised most prominently of jade, azurite, lapis, pyrite, abalone, and mother of pearl, is placed in the routed guitar body by hand. The inlay process is so involved that we elicit the help of our friends over at Aulson Inlay. With Aulson’s knowledge and experience we were able to create this museum quality instrument that is as fun to look at as it is to play. Check out this blog post to see the Dragon’s build process!

PRS Acoustics: The Rosettes

While many people are familiar with PRS as an electric guitar manufacturer, few are aware of a small acoustic shop we’ve tucked above our main electric production floor. Nestled in this secluded area within our Maryland factory, 10 luthiers build boutique heirloom-quality acoustic guitars in small batch runs. This blog post covers one of these small batch runs, The Rosettes.
